There was a massive shutdown over the entire country. Corruption is at the highest levels of government, violence, extortion by gangs and poverty are the main sources. Guatemala has a 49% poverty rate.

This week a prison built to house 500 inmates had over 2000 incarcerated. Run by two major gangs the prison has an ongoing gang war with beheadings being the choice method of killing rivals.

The USA government has removed interaction with the Guatemalan government prosecution divisions due to corruption by the President and Attorney General. Immigrants are heading for the USA in droves. Anger over the lack of vaccine is further fueling the fire.
