Billy preached for me today.
Today is election day in Guatemala.
Dottie and I attended church where Charles Rogers was preaching. I have known Charles for over years. We were on the board of World Ministry Fellowship. In 1981 Charles called and asked me to go to Africa with him for 3 months. I told him there was no way I could leave my church for that long. He called in 1982, 83, 84, 85, 86 and 87 always asking if I would go with him to Africa and each time I refused. Then he called in 1988 and asked me to go with him to Guatemala. He promised I could preach as much as I wanted. He told me the cost and it was so much less than going to Africa I thought “This is a cheap way to get him to leave me alone about missions” so I agreed.
We came to Guatemala and the first morning I left the hotel at 4am and went walking. Everywhere I went in downtown Guatemala City there were children sleeping on the streets. I cried every day that we were there. It was a full week of tears. On the last day I knew I could not return to Lake Charles and be a pastor. On Friday the Lord spoke to my heart and simply said, “I do not need money, land, buildings, visas or fluency in Spanish. All I need is someone to love them.” I returned home weeping and 6 months later Dottie and I with 5 children in the back of a pickup truck arrived in Guatemala. Charles Rogers told me that he knew I would be in Guatemala so he invited me on the trip. The last 30 years have been a result of Charles hearing God and being obedient.
